Essentials

This Guide is a WIP Welcome Welcome to the world of Modded Morrowind! Morrowind modding is older, wiser and more refined than it's younger cousins. Mod authors have spent years crafting an experience that expands this wonderful game! Unlike Skyrim it does not matter what version of Morrowind you own or pirate because all versions will work with this guide! This guide assumes you have installed OpenMW!

Quick Questions

Q: What version should I buy? A: Doesn't matter, they all work the same for MWSE and OpenMW

Q: OpenMW or MWSE? What are those and which one do I choose? A: Open Morrowind (OpenMW) is a source port of Morrowind for modern systems. It greatly improves performance and adds quality of life improvements. Morrowind Script Extender (MWSE) uses the original game install launcher and does not have the quality of life improvements that OpenMW gives you. However, MWSE has a lot more potential for complex mods (As of time of writing at least). In the end the choice is yours but I will be writing this guide with OpenMW in mind.

Q: What about VR? A: There is a VR mod right here. Because it's a fork of OpenMW most mods for that should translate to VR!

Q: What about modpacks? A: Morrowind modpacks seem to be somewhat lacking as I looked through several while writing this guide. I can't say which are worth your time.

Q: What's the best mod organizer tool for Morrowind? A: Unless you're a Linux user, Mod Organizer 2 is still the best. One of the other writers on the site told me about Amethyst Mod Manager which I am using on my Linux setup

Q: I don't like your recommendations A:Okay. If you have suggestions you can make an account and submit them or recommend them on the thread.

Q: Didn't this site used to look different? A: There was a change in management due to a lack of funding on the part of the previous owner. The previous owner is still around and runs the Discord community.

Q: Who are you then?/What happened to the guide by Trainwiz A:I'm BaloneyPony AKA the Lorekeeper. I was writing the guides on the previous incarnation of the site too. Trainwiz is busy with his paid mods and Underspace but you can find him on the thread from time to time. I have referenced his old guide in this one.

Mod Organizing

In Short use Mod Organizer 2. A mod organizer organizes your mod files and helps to identify conflicts, avoid overwrites and overall make your life easier. If you're use to installing mods manually you may want to check this out rather than making another backup of your game folder and wasting space on your computer! If you're used to the Nexus Mod Manager or Vortex you should switch to MO2. It can be intimidating but it's well worth the switch!

Mod Organizer 2 Mod Organizer is now under new management and is being constantly updated, with some new features and a few missing, it is the best Mod Manager right now, everything mentioned on the Skyrim LE page still holds up, better organized interface, tons of options, conflict warnings, LOOT integration. It also has features that are pretty much necessary if you want to make your own mod conversions if you want to delve into that, such as the built in BSA extractor. Major missing feature: automatic .bsa management
Vortex Vortex is the new manager developed by the Nexus people, who hired the original MO dev to do it. It has an Alpha release open to the public. Now, I'll be very sincere here, I was disappointed when I first saw and used Vortex. It being developed by the same person as the original Mod Organizer gave me hope that we would be getting something equal if not better than Mod Organizer, but when I first used it, I realized that Vortex is just a re-skin of the Nexus Mod Manager. Gopher has a video series where he explores all the features in Vortex.

Essential Mods

These are the list of mods a person can't play without, no matter who you are.

[[https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/45096Patch for Purists] The Unofficial Patch for Morrowind. This is far better at deciding what is or isn't a bug and does not go out of it's way to change things.
[[https://openmw.org/OpenMW] A source port of Morrowind made with greater stability and potential for modding in mind
[[https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/45468Morrowind Script Extender] Not recommended but linked here for those curious. This extends the potential for scripts for Morrowind but does not work alongside OpenMW. OpenMW has bee in a long process of replacing the functions of MWSE for their own engine.

Data Packs

Data packs for a number of popular mods. While not needed for every playthrough you might as well grab these now.

[[https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/44537Tamriel_Data] Data pack for the popular Tamriel Rebuilt project. Several other mods are known to use this aswell!
[[https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/49042OAAB - Of Ash and Blight] A asset repository focused on mods set on Vvardenfell itself.
[[https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/50647AATL - An Addendum to Tamrielic Lore] A mod focused on adding new lore focused artifact additions

UI mods

Morrowind UI mods aren't nearly as in depth as Skyrim's but here's some popular choices
